We the People seeks volunteers to be judges (12/7)

We the People is a program conducted by the AZ Bar Foundation and sponsored in part by the Supreme Court. They are in dire need of judges for our regional tournaments in Phoenix/Mesa and southern Arizona (which will be held at Florence City Hall). The tournaments are Saturday, December 7.

Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board (2 vacancies)

The Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board is a politically balanced volunteer body consisting of citizens appointed by the Arizona Governor. The Board is authorized to make periodic surveys of the existence and effect of discrimination in the enjoyment of civil rights by any person within the state of Arizona, to foster the elimination of discrimination through community effort, and to issue publications of the results of studies, investigations and research as in its judgment will tend to promote goodwill and the elimination of discrimination between persons because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, familial status or national origin. The Board is part of and receives staff support from the Civil Rights Division of the Arizona Department of Law. The Commission meets on the second Monday of every month at 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm in the Administrative Conference Room, Fire Administration Building, 150 S. 12th Street.

Past projects of the Board include creating the Civil Rights Guide on Service, Support, and Assistance Animals.

Phoenix Art Museum Docent

If you have a passion for art and serving the community through engaging conversations with visitors of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities, volunteer with the Phoenix Art Museum by becoming a document. When you donate your time and talents to Phoenix Art Museum, you make a significant impact on our shared community. Whether you’re an art lover, an educator, or simply a dedicated member of the public, the Museum offers a variety of ways that you can help further its mission of cultivating greater access to the arts and arts education.

As a Docent, you have the opportunity to:

• Lead Museum tours for adult and school groups
• Present interactive talks about art to schools, community centers, or senior living centers
• Assist visitors, Docents, and Museum staff in the Lemon Art Research Library
• Engage with the broader Phoenix community, both in and outside the Museum
• Access exclusive lectures by artists and curators, gallery and exhibition previews, and other arts and education programming through bimonthly Docent Continuing Education events

City of Phoenix Women’s Commission

The purpose of the Phoenix Women's Commission is to provide a formal forum for citizen review of the City's diversity efforts, salary equity, and to serve as an advisory board to the Council. The Commission shall not become involved in political issues nor in matters which are outside of the City's jurisdiction. The Commission shall recommend improvements on matters related to the status of women and implement specific projects and programs as approved by the Mayor and City Council with the following areas of responsibility: 1) Review the City of Phoenix diversity efforts regarding recruitment, hiring, placement, and promotional programs, and salary equity to identify strengths and weaknesses; and to make recommendations of changes needed. 2) Define, review, and prioritize the problems of women as those problems relate to the City. 3) Recommend possible solutions to those problems. 4) Develop short range and long range goals and objectives for improving the status of women. 5) Evaluate projects as requested by the Mayor and Council. 6) Recommend persons to serve on City standing committees, advisory boards and ad hoc committees. 7) Assist in efforts to provide information and educational programs to improve the status of women. 8) Provide written reports to the Council regarding recommendations, submit special reports at the request of the Council, and submit an annual report of its activities to the Council in December of each year.

City of Chandler Domestic Violence Commission

This Commission advises the City Council on domestic violence issues in Chandler. The Commissioners remain current on legislature and resources that assist victims and their families. Commissioners participate in community outreach events to raise awareness. Call 480-782-4566 for information.

The Housing and Human Services Commission advises the Council on the allocation of local and federal funds to support human services, housing and neighborhood revitalization projects benefiting low- and moderate-income Chandler residents. Commissions on Trial Court Appointments (Maricopa Super. Dist. 2, 4, and 5; Pinal Super. Dist. 1-5, Pima County - Supervisorial District 2, 3, and 5) (Application Due November 4, 2024 at 5:00 p.m.)

The Arizona Commission on Trial Court Appointments is a group of ten public members and five attorney members, chaired by the Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court to ensure the most qualified candidates for trial court judgeships go to the governor for consideration and ultimate appointment. There are Commissions for Trial Court Appointments in Maricopa, Pima, Pinal, and Coconino counties. Duties include reviewing judicial applications, interviewing candidates, and sending a list of qualified applicants to the Governor. There are sixteen members with staggered four-year terms. No more than three attorneys may be from the same political party, and none of the attorneys from the same political party shall reside in the same supervisorial district. There are multiple vacancies in all counties.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications:

• Active Member in good standing with the State Bar of Arizona
• Applicants shall have resided in the state and shall have been admitted to practice law before the Arizona Supreme Court for not less than five (5) years and shall have resided in their respective Supervisorial District for at least one year before being nominated.
• Any political party affiliation
• None of the attorney or non-attorney members of the commission shall hold any governmental office, elective or appointive, for profit and no attorney member is eligible for appointment to any judicial office of this state until one year after membership in the commission terminates.

Starting Your Own Neighborhood Organization!

In the City of Phoenix (though likely a similar process exists in other cities), residents can get more involved in decisions affecting their neighborhoods by creating their own group (a neighborhood association, block watch, or business alliance).
Eligibility: (1) The group must meet twice in six months, and take attendance and minutes; (2) Organization Boundaries must be within the City of Phoenix and not larger than one square mile; (3) Members listing of at least ten members. For details, please click here.

City of Phoenix - Neighborhood Block Watch Fund Oversight Committee (5 vacancies)

The Neighborhood Block Watch Fund Oversight Committee is established to solicit, evaluate, and recommend to the City Council appropriate proposals to expend funds for the expansion of block watch programs, within the constraints imposed by the Neighborhood Protection Ordinance, adopted at the special election of October 5, 1993. It consists of 10-20 members: each member of the City Council appoints two residents of the City as members. There are currently 5 vacancies on the Committee.

State Bar of Arizona – Night of the Living Will, Volunteers Needed on 10/26

Dress up as your favorite G-rated character and help members of the community prepare Health Care Powers of Attorney and Living Wills. No experience necessary! (There will be a training session for anyone who needs it.)

The team at the Area Agency on Aging will connect attorneys with participants. We're planning 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. with a lunch break at noon. There's no need to commit to the whole day. Just morning or afternoon is fine, too. Let us know how much time you have, and we'll accommodate you. But please dress up! Being in costume makes the event fun and the subject easier to talk about. This event is sponsored by the Arizona State Elder Law Section and the Maricopa County Area Agency on Aging.

Maricopa County Bar Association (MCBA) - Family Law Section Board Members Needed

The MCBA’s Family Law section is looking for new members for its Board of Directors for the term of 2025 through 2027. Members of the Board attend a once-monthly meeting and help organize CLEs, networking functions, and other events. Board service is a chance to grow personally and professionally, develop valuable skills, gain unique experience, and make lasting connections with other passionate and motivated attorneys and legal professionals. The Family Law board meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 12 p.m. via Zoom. All board members are expected to attend. Board service is a rare chance to help strategically improve the programs and services that we offer to our section members and provides unique opportunities to expand your network and gain recognition from your employer, community, or peers.

Candidates must be active members of the Family Law Section and in good standing with the MCBA. Candidates are asked to submit a brief statement of interest, including a biography and an explanation of why the candidate would be a beneficial addition to the Board, as well as a resume.

Girls on the Run seek 2025 Coaches (10/1/24)

At GOTR of Maricopa & Pinal County, teaching essential life skills is the cornerstone of their research-based programs. Trained volunteer coaches facilitate lessons that blend physical activity with life skill development, including managing emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy.

Requirements

• You must be at least 18 years of age.
• Complete our Coach Application click here
• Consent to and complete a background check.
• Attend and complete Coach Training.
• Provide CPR certification information.
• Commit to the season’s lesson schedule, which is two times per week typically after school in the early afternoon.

Season Details

• The Season starts at the end of January or beginning of February depending on the site.
• Coach Applications are due by October 1.
• In-person Coach Trainings will be offered between January 3 and January 18, 2025.
• The end of season 5K will be April 26, 2025.

United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Arizona – Pro Bono Attorney Panel

The Pro Bono Panel provides consultation and representation to pro se parties, either debtor or creditor, in "discrete adversary proceedings and contested matters." The Panel is designed to complement the existing resources available to pro se parties at the Self Help Center at the Bankruptcy Court. The program will be strictly limited to representation in adversary proceedings and contested matters- matters that demand the kind of litigation skills pro se parties lack.

The Pro Bono Panel is entirely voluntary. Panel members will never be required to accept representation in a particular matter, may decline representation because of a conflict of interest or for any other reason, and will have the opportunity to meet the pro se party prior to acceptance of representation.

Gift of Adoption Board Member

Gift of Adoption is a national charity that provides grants of up to $15,000 to complete the adoptions of children in vulnerable circumstances from the U.S. and around the world. Priority is placed on helping children for whom reunification is not possible and are facing what is possibly their last or only chance at adoption, including those at-risk of separation from siblings, entering foster care, aging-out of an orphanage, or with critical special needs.

Gift of Adoption chapter board members serve 3-year terms. Each board member is tasked with recruiting one new board member to their chapter team by the completion of each term. This is a non-compensatory, volunteer chapter board role. Our chapter board members are impactful and game changers.

Maricopa Workforce Development Board

The Maricopa Workforce Development Board (MCWDB) was established to assist the Board of Supervisors (BOS) as the Chief Local Elected Officials in strategic planning, oversight, and evaluation of the local workforce development area, and promote effective outcomes consistent with statewide goals, objectives, and negotiated local performance. The MCWDB’s main goal is to represent a wide variety of individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout the local area. Arizona Lawyer Apprentice Program

Are you passionate about making a difference in underserved communities and looking for a unique path to becoming a licensed attorney in Arizona? The Arizona Lawyer Apprentice Program (ALAP) might be the opportunity you've been waiting for. Designed to address the shortage of lawyers in rural Arizona and in public law firms, the ALAP offers a first of its kind alternative to the traditional route to practice law in Arizona.

To be certified eligible for an ALAP license, applicants must:

• Graduate from an ABA-accredited law school.
• Achieve a score of 260-269 on the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE) administered after July 1, 2023.
• Meet all other requirements for admission to practice law in Arizona, including a thorough background check.
• Secure qualifying employment and commit to practice under the supervision of a qualified Arizona attorney in rural Arizona or in a public law practice, for a minimum of two years.

As an ALAP licensee, you will not only gain invaluable hands-on experience, but you will also play a crucial role in enhancing access to justice in areas where it is needed most. If you are eager to build a meaningful career while helping to bridge the gap in legal services, this program is your chance to make a real impact and become part of a solution to Arizona's "legal deserts." Volunteer Lawyers Program:


The Volunteer Lawyers Program (VLP) overseen by Community Legal Services (CLS) allows attorneys, law school graduates, and others with law-related skills to provide pro bono representation, brief advocacy, legal advice, or education to clients. CLS is dedicated to providing legal assistance, advice or representation, self-help materials, and legal education so people can know their rights. It focuses on helping survivors of domestic violence; assisting victims of consumer fraud and abuse, protecting tenants from unlawful/unfair practices by landlords, foreclosures, legal problems affecting agricultural workers, wage claims and other employment matters, and federal and state programs affecting peoples’ health and economic stability.

Arizonans for Children Foster Care Mentor:

Arizonans for Children is a nonprofit that works to alleviate the hardships experienced by children in the foster care system. Its mentorship program offers a free tutor/mentor for any child aged 5-18 in the custody of the state placed within Maricopa County. Mentors are placed with a child for at least 1 year and work on a variety of projects with their mentee during their time together, depending on the needs of the child. Whether it is educational, emotional or life skill training, our tutor/mentors spend at least 8 hours per month assisting their child in developing these skills.

Experienced Federal Court Litigators Wanted:

The Federal Court Self-Service Clinic seeks litigators with at least several years of federal court practice experience to volunteer for 2 hours to provide brief phone direction to pro se litigants about civil cases in the District Court in Phoenix. You can choose how often to volunteer. You will receive advance information for conflict checks. Each litigant benefits from 30 minutes of guidance, so you can help up to four people in need. The Clinic is a collaborative effort of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona in Phoenix and the Volunteer Lawyers Program. Community Legal Services provides primary malpractice coverage.

A Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteer, or CASA, is a unique and extremely important role that serves to help preserve the well-being of children in foster care. New CASA Volunteers are always needed. Being a CASA is very rewarding because volunteers give a voice to children. Information Technology Authorization Committee

The Information Technology Authorization Committee has jurisdiction to approve or reject IT projects with development costs exceeding $1 million for all three branches of government. Membership includes representatives of all three branches, as well as members with private sector experience in IT, and one at-large member who can be appointed from either the private sector or state government service.

Applications are being accepted for the Information Technology Authorization Committee through the standard application.

Arizona Commission on Judicial Conduct

Created in 1970, the Arizona Commission on Judicial Conduct was established as an independent state agency responsible for investigating complaints against justices and judges on the supreme court, court of appeals, superior court, justice of the peace courts, and municipal courts. The Commission consists of 11 members with diverse backgrounds who serve six-year terms. Three public members, who cannot be attorneys or active or retired judges, are nominated by the Governor and confirmed by the State Senate.

City of Peoria Judicial and Public Defender Advisory Board (3)

The Board is responsible for conducting investigations into the background and qualifications of candidates for the office of Presiding Municipal Judge and Associate Municipal Judge, reviewing proposals for selection of Public Defender and alternative defender services, recommends appropriate terms and conditions to be added to such contracts, conducts reviews for all city public defenders, and recommends the awards of public defender and alternative defender services contracts to the City Council.

City of Peoria Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Board (1)

The Board also renders advisory opinions on matters relating to operating hours, amounts to be charged for overdue books, library programs, and promotion of library services.

State Bar of Arizona Board of Legal Specialization (2 Public Members, 1 Law School Representative) - Application Deadline Extended to August 21, 2024

Purpose: The Board of Legal Specialization (BLS), under the supervision of the Arizona Supreme Court, administers the program for the certification of legal specialists in 10 practice areas: administrative, bankruptcy, construction defect, criminal law, estate and trust, family law, personal injury and wrongful death, real estate, tax, and workers’ compensation. Identifying attorneys who have a high degree of experience in certain fields of law improves the quality of legal services and provides useful information for those seeking legal services.

The 13-member BLS consists of eight practicing attorneys who are Active Members of, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Arizona. The Board’s composition is four certified legal specialists and four lawyers who are not specialists, one representative from an ABA-accredited law school in Arizona, and four members of the public.

Openings: Nine; two certified legal specialists, two active attorneys who are not certified legal specialists, four non-attorney public members, and a representative from an ABA-accredited Arizona law school. Per policy, judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. The Board of Governors will submit nominations to the Arizona Supreme Court for its ultimate appointment.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications: BLS members must –
• Possess the time, skill and patience to examine applications and peer review information submitted by attorneys seeking specialization certification or recertification.
• Understand the importance of applying the Supreme Court Rules pertaining to the process consistently and fairly.
• Attend approximately 12 meetings per year that normally convene at 4:00 p.m.

Term: Four years.

Arizona Supreme Court Committee on Examinations - Application Deadline Wednesday, August 21, 2024

Purpose: Oversee the Uniform Bar Examination, grading and administration of all test components; review accommodation requests; proctor the February and July exams; responsible for the performance of the graders (2 graders, approximately 500 essay answers per exam); adhere to the grading standards of the National Conference of Bar Examiners.

Openings: Four lawyer positions.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications:
• Active members in good standing.
• Judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible.
• Applicants should familiarize themselves with Supreme Court Rules 33 and 35 which establish the duties of the Committee.
• Committee applicants who currently serve or have served within the past two years as law school faculty (including adjunct) at one of Arizona's accredited law schools or as tutors or faculty for bar review courses will not be considered if such service could give rise to significant conflicts of interest regarding their duty to the Supreme Court to review or grade the examinations of their current or former students.

Community Engagement Task Force

The Town of Gilbert is seeking teen and adult applicants for the Community Engagement Task Force to focus on the subject of Teen Violence. The Task Force will examine existing resources (including recent school survey results, Town of Gilbert programs, partnerships with schools and non-profits, current webpages, etc.), identify gaps, and prepare recommendations for the Council in the areas of Resources, Education, and Promotion. ABA DLA and YLLP Pipeline Program Applications

Are you a young or diverse lawyer looking to get more involved in the Litigation Section? If so, you should strongly consider applying for one of the Section’s leadership pipeline programs.

The application process for the Diverse Leaders Academy (DLA) and Young Lawyer Leadership Program (YLLP) is now open. These two-year programs provide opportunities for young and diverse lawyers to become actively involved in the Section's meetings, committees, and activities. Program participants will become members of a Section Committee or task force, engage in substantive work, and be paired with a mentor from the Section’s experienced leaders.
The Diverse Leadership Academy (more info here) provides opportunities for lawyers in underrepresented groups such as racially/ethnically diverse lawyers, persons with disabilities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender lawyers, to participate in leadership roles within the Litigation Section. The program seeks to attract, retain, and develop talented and diverse Section leaders and further demonstrate the Section’s commitment to ensuring equal opportunity in the profession. Arizona Juvenile Justice Commission:

The Arizona Juvenile Justice Commission provides leadership to state and local communities to develop and maintain a coordinated, best practice approach to juvenile justice prevention, intervention and public safety. The Commission advises the governor and the Arizona State Legislature on matters related to the improvement of the juvenile justice system, and its services to youth and families, Develops policies to improve the quality of juvenile justice and conditions for children in care and advocates for youth involvement in both the planning and implementation of projects and encourage parental involvement in delinquency prevention and intervention programs. Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers:

The Interagency Coordinating Council for Infants and Toddlers (Council) consists of members from the following Arizona state agencies: Department of Economic Security, Department of Education, Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind, Department of Health Services, and the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System Administration. The Council develops and implements a statewide comprehensive, coordinated, multidisciplinary and interagency service delivery system for eligible infants and toddlers and their families. Each state must plan for the establishment of a delivery system with adequate and equitable services; competent, trained personnel; coordination of financial resources; and development of programs and services which are responsive to the needs of families. Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board:

The Arizona Early Childhood Development and Health Board consists of nine appointed members and, as non-voting ex officio members, the superintendent of public instruction, the director of the department of health services and the director of the department of economic security. The non-voting ex officio members may designate a member of their departmental staff responsible for early childhood development and health issues to participate as their representative. Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services Pro Bono Program:

The Arizona Legal Women and Youth Services (ALWAYS) Pro Bono Program provides no-cost legal services to support the safety, stability, and self-sufficiency of young people and trafficking survivors impacted by homelessness, human trafficking, abuse, and the foster care system. Volunteer attorneys help fill a critical gap by providing pro bono representation to Arizonans who otherwise would be left without full access to justice. Volunteer attorneys will be placed on a pro bono database. Cases will be referred to volunteer attorneys as needed.

Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board:

The Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board is a politically balanced volunteer body consisting of seven citizens appointed by the Arizona Governor to three-year terms. The Board is authorized to make periodic surveys of the existence and effect of discrimination in the enjoyment of civil rights by any person within the state of Arizona, to foster the elimination of discrimination through community effort, and to issue publications of the results of studies, investigations and research as in its judgment will tend to promote goodwill and the elimination of discrimination. The Board is part of and receives staff support from the Civil Rights Division of the Arizona Department of Law. The Board has one current vacancy.

Experienced Federal Court Litigators Wanted:

The Federal Court Self-Service Clinic seeks litigators with at least several years of federal court practice experience to volunteer for 2 hours to provide brief phone direction to pro se litigants about civil cases in the District Court in Phoenix. You can choose how often to volunteer. You will receive advance information for conflict checks. Each litigant benefits from 30 minutes of guidance, so you can help up to four people in need. The Clinic is a collaborative effort of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona in Phoenix and the Volunteer Lawyers Program. Community Legal Services provides primary malpractice coverage.

Applications are open for the newly formed Access to Justice Committee* through March 11, 2024! The purpose of the Committee is to enhance and promote access to civil legal services for all individuals by identifying and eliminating barriers to justice. The State Bar is seeking legal professionals, technology experts, and community stakeholders to join this committee to address critical and important issues. The current State Bar President will appoint initial members to the committee for staggered terms between 1-3 years.

The Access to Justice Committee will:

• Advocate for policies and reforms that increase free or low-cost legal representation for low and middle-income individuals.
• Enhance access to legal services for individuals in underserved and underrepresented communities.
• Promote legal education to the public and raise awareness about the importance of access to justice and available resources.
• Advance public and private funding of legal aid.

State Bar of Arizona Civil Practice and Procedure Committee - Application Deadline March 29, 2024

Purpose: The Committee studies and makes recommendations on proposals and/or issues involving the various rules impacting civil practice as submitted by the State Bar, third parties, and court-appointed committees and commissions. Members prepare petitions regarding rule amendments and comments on third-party petitions as deemed necessary and assist the superior court with local-rule conformance and restyling efforts.

The Committee meets approximately 8 times per year, usually on the first Thursday of the month, for up to 1.5 hours. Additional time may be required outside of the scheduled meetings.

Deadline: Applications are due by March 29, 2024.

City of Tempe The Parks, Recreation, Golf, and Double Butte Cemetery Advisory Board (1 vacancy):

The Parks, Recreation, Golf, and Double Butte Cemetery Advisory Board advises the City Council and assists the City Manager in the establishment of essential policies, rules and regulations relating to the planning, acquisition, disposition, operation, use, care and maintenance of facilities owned, leased or otherwise acquired by the City for use as parks, municipal golf courses, or the cemetery.

There are eleven members, who must be residents of Tempe, who serve three-year terms on the Board. Meetings generally take place on the third Wednesday of each month.

State Bar of Arizona Board of Legal Specialization (Specialists, Non-Specialists, Public Member Seats) - Application Deadline March 20, 2024

Purpose: The Board of Legal Specialization (BLS), under the supervision of the Arizona Supreme Court, administers the program for the certification of legal specialists in 10 practice areas: administrative, bankruptcy, construction defect, criminal law, estate and trust, family law, personal injury and wrongful death, real estate, tax, and workers’ compensation. Identifying attorneys who have a high degree of experience in certain fields of law improves the quality of legal services and provides useful information for those seeking legal services.

The 13-member BLS consists of eight practicing attorneys who are Active Members of, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Arizona. The Board’s composition is four certified legal specialists and four lawyers who are not specialists, one representative from an ABA-accredited law school in Arizona, and four members of the public.

Openings: Nine; two certified legal specialists, two active attorneys who are not certified legal specialists, four non-attorney public members, and a representative from an ABA-accredited Arizona law school. Per policy, judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. The Board of Governors will submit nominations to the Arizona Supreme Court for its ultimate appointment.

• Possess the time, skill and patience to examine applications and peer review information submitted by attorneys seeking specialization certification or recertification.

The Flinn-Brown Fellowship helps experienced civic leaders from throughout Arizona expand their knowledge, skills, and networks to help address Arizona’s long-term issues.

Flinn-Brown is the flagship program of the nonpartisan Arizona Center for Civic Leadership. It offers learning about Arizona policy and politics through the Flinn-Brown Academy; connections with top state leaders and policy experts; long-term support for civic-leadership development; and more.

The Tempe Family Justice Commission advises the City Council and assists City departments in promoting access to justice and safety for victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and sex trafficking; and providing leadership and facilitating access to resources that will contribute to wrap-around services and a multi-disciplinary response for the victims and survivors. New Pathways for Youth is looking for Mentors.

Level Up by New Pathways for Youth works with Phoenix-area high school-aged kids who have experienced high levels of adversity. Youth are matched with a volunteer mentor, who serves as a caring and stable adult in their life and supports them in completing a research-based program for setting and meeting personal goals. Mentors need to attend an introductory meeting that is held online to learn more about the program and its procedures. The introductory meetings are held weekly throughout January and February. The Development Advisory Board is responsible for overseeing the development process. Citizens’ Clean Elections Commission (Multiple Vacancies, Rolling Appointments)

The Arizona Citizens’ Clean Elections Commission is a citizen-initiative created five-member body that regulates campaign finance, and enables truly competitive races through public financing of campaigns that can show a requisite level of grassroots support. The Commission needs people who care about transparency for political campaigns, for candidates and political action committees, as well as voter education and outreach. With the overwhelming approval of the Voters’ Right To Know Act and the recent bi-partisan commitment to use the Commission’s website as Arizona’s “one stop shop” for voter information, the Commission is more important than ever in ensuring free and fair elections.

Commission members are appointed by the highest-ranking members of the democratic and republican parties in state government. A maximum of two members from the same political party can serve at the same time, and only three Commissioners can live in the same county. Appointed terms are for five years. The Commission is a priority for the Governor’s office, as all Commission members are currently holdovers.

2024 Board of Governors Election - Call for Candidates (Due 12/6)

The call for candidates is underway to run for election to the State Bar of Arizona Board of Governors. Seats are open in four Board Districts. Candidate criteria includes location and years of practice and being an Active Member. Nomination packages must be received by 5 pm on December 6.

Candidates must be an Active Member of the State Bar (and must have been for at least 5 years prior to election), and have had no record of disciplinary sanctions under Rule 60. Members elected to serve on the Board of Governors shall not represent a party in any disciplinary matter nor serve in such capacity for one year after the expiration of their Board service.

Candidates must submit a nominating petition, brief biographical sketch or candidate’s statement, answers to questions that are asked of all candidates, a discipline disclosure statement, and high-resolution digital photograph.

It advocates for continued public funding for the arts and culture sector, arts education, cultural equity, and other initiatives that further the growth and sustainability of the creative sector in Phoenix and the greater metropolitan area. The committee meets once per month on the second Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and the term is for three (3) years.

City of Phoenix Judicial Selection Advisory Board – (Application Deadline EXTENDED to 10/25/2023)

Purpose: The Judicial Selection Advisory Board (JSAB): 1) seeks out and encourages qualified individuals to apply for the office of judge of the City Court or the City of Phoenix Ethics Commission; 2) conducts investigations into the background and qualifications of City judicial and Commission candidates; 3) submits its recommendations for appointment or reappointment of City judicial and Commission candidates to the Mayor, who thereafter shall convene the City Council for the purpose of interviewing all candidates. When making its recommendations the JSAB shall consider the diversity of the City’s population; however, the primary consideration shall be merit.

Openings: One. The Board of Governors is asked to submit three nominations to the Mayor of Phoenix for the JSAB opening. In addition to one active member of the State Bar, the other JSAB members are the Presiding Judge of the Maricopa County Superior Court (or designee), an Appellate Court Judge, and the following who reside in the City of Phoenix -- a member of the Maricopa County Bar Association and three public members who are not City employees.

Criteria/Qualifications: Applicants must be Active Members of, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Arizona and reside in the City of Phoenix. Per policy, judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. JSAB members serve without salary or compensation.

Arizona Supreme Court Committee on Character and Fitness (8/28/23)

Purpose: The Committee members are responsible for the investigation and recommendation of applicants for admission to the practice of law in Arizona. The Committee reviews approximately 500 applications per year. In addition, Committee members attend inquiries and hearings concerning applicant qualifications.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications: Per policy, applicants must be “active members” in good standing. Judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. Committee members must possess the time, skill and patience to review confidential detailed reports of background investigations into financial, criminal, civil, employment, disciplinary and academic matters. Committee members must have the ability to marshal and present evidence, examine witnesses and write clear, concise and well-reasoned findings and recommendations when required. Committee members must understand the importance of applying the Supreme Court Rules pertaining to this process consistently and fairly. Communication with Court staff and other Committee members is encouraged and expected. Applicants should describe prior experience with regulation or discipline of professionals, and their views on the observance of an attorney’s professional ethical obligations, on their application. Applicants who currently serve or have served within the past two years as law school faculty (including adjunct) at one of Arizona's accredited law schools shall not be considered if such service could give rise to significant conflicts of interest regarding their duty to the Supreme Court to review and evaluate the character and fitness of their current or former students.

The Committee conducts at least one hearing monthly in Phoenix. Members are randomly selected and if chosen are expected to participate in assigned hearings. Members must also participate in one or more informal inquiry per month held throughout the state on an as-needed basis. In addition, each member is assigned several applicant files for independent review each month. Between file review and hearings/business meetings, members devote an average of about 25 hours per month to their Committee responsibilities. Mileage is paid for any members residing outside Maricopa County, but there is no other compensation for service as a Committee member.

Openings: Two lawyer and two non-lawyer appointments will be made by the Arizona Supreme Court.

Term: Initial appointment of four years, with the possibility of reappointment.

Purpose: The Committee members oversee the Uniform Bar Examination, MBE, MPRE, and grading and administration of all test components, and proctor the February and July exams. Additionally, Examiners are responsible for the performance of the graders (12,000 essay answers per year) and for the formula and weighting of the components of the required Bar Examinations.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications: Per policy, applicants must be “active members” in good standing. Judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. Applicants should familiarize themselves with Supreme Court Rules 33 and 35 which establish the duties of the Committee. Committee members must possess the time, skill and patience to fulfill the responsibilities of Committee members, including review, organization and grading of confidential bar examination materials. It is important to apply the Supreme Court Rules pertaining to this process consistently and fairly. Communication with Court staff and other Committee members is encouraged and expected. Applicants should describe prior experience with regulation or testing of professionals, and their views on professional ethical obligations, on their application. Applicants for membership on the Committee who currently serve or have served within the past two years as law school faculty (including adjunct) at one of Arizona's accredited law schools or as tutors or faculty for bar review courses will not be considered if such service could give rise to significant conflicts of interest regarding their duty to the Supreme Court to review or grade the examinations of their current or former students.

MCBA Board of Directors for 2024-2025 (9/29/2023)

The MCBA is inviting members to declare their candidacy for available seats on the Board of Directors for 2024-2025 (one seat is designated for a community member.

Board members attend monthly meetings, liaise with one or more MCBA sections, divisions, or committees, and support the work of the association.

Candidates must be active members in good standing with the MCBA. Candidates are asked to submit a formal letter of candidacy to the board of directors (can be in the form of an email), a 200-word bio, and a high-resolution color photo. Resumes or CVs are not acceptable. The bio may include an optional position statement of the candidate’s vision and priorities for the MCBA. Position statements and any other campaign or election materials may not refer to other candidates or include defamatory or inappropriate language, as determined by an ad hoc election review committee appointed by the president of the association.

Judicial Appointments Advisory Board (Vacancies opening Sept. & Oct. 2023)

The Judicial Appointments Advisory Board (JAAB) makes advisory recommendations to the City Council regarding the appointment and reappointment of full-time city judges. The JAAB will use merit-based criteria to recommend the best-qualified persons to become city judges and to advise the City Council about retaining city judges.

The seven-member JAAB will consist of two active judges, one representative from both the State Bar and the Scottsdale Bar associations, and three citizens appointed by the City Council

Vacancies for the active judge members will be open in September 2023. A vacancy for the State Bar member will open in October 2023.

Gilbert Planning Commission

 

The Town of Gilbert is seeking applicants for five (5) volunteer positions on the Gilbert Planning Commission: two (2) regular full-term positions, one (1) regular partial-term position, and two (2) alternate positions. There are incumbents who may reapply.

 

The Planning Commission also acts as the Design Review Board. The Commission reviews and advises the Council on a variety of planning issues, including long range community planning goals and policies, immediate planning problems, design review (site plans, landscape, architecture), and specific development proposals.

Candidates should have experience actively listening to many viewpoints and know how to raise thoughtful questions in a group setting. Groundwater Users Advisory Councils

The 1980 Groundwater Management Code established Groundwater Advisory Councils for each Active Management Areas (“AMA”). The Federal Court Self-Service Clinic seeks litigators with at least several years of federal court practice experience to volunteer for 2 hours to provide brief phone direction to pro se litigants about civil cases in the District Court in Phoenix. Delegates represent the State Bar of Arizona at the Annual and Midyear Meetings of the American Bar Association House of Delegates. The State Bar reimburses only that portion of Delegate expenses relating to that portion of the House’s agenda which addresses the regulation of the profession and improving the quality of legal services. Applicants must be Active Members of, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Arizona. Per policy, applicants must be “active members” in good standing. Maricopa County Superior Court Commissioner Selection Advisory Board (4/21/23)

The Maricopa County Superior Court needs to immediately fill a vacancy on its Commissioner Selection Advisory Board that requires an applicant to be a member of the Maricopa County Bar Association (MCBA). The MCBA will recommend three candidates for consideration. The committee requires about 40 hours of work each time it meets to consider and select candidates. There are at least two full-day meetings, plus additional time spent reviewing applications in detail and doing due diligence on one or two candidates. Commissioner Applicant Mentor Program – Looking for insights into the role of a court commissioner, details on the application process, or practice with mock interviews for the commissioner recruitment? The Maricopa County Superior Court has a new resource available to assist prospective commissioners. Supported by volunteers who are current judicial officers, the applicant mentorship program is designed to bolster an applicant’s readiness for the commissioner hiring process. Mentors may meet with applicants and answer questions about the process. While the mentor will not serve as an advocate in the formal hiring process before the committee, the mentor will provide feedback to the committee and will be available to guide prospective commissioners through the recruitment steps.

Client Protection Fund Board of Trustees (1 opening)

The Client Protection Fund is a trust that exists as a separate entity from the State Bar of Arizona. The Fund’s purpose is to promote public confidence in the administration of justice, and to preserve the integrity of the legal profession by reimbursing people who have sustained losses caused by the dishonest conduct of lawyers admitted and licensed to practice law in Arizona. Each lawyer licensed to practice law in Arizona contributes $20 per year to the Fund. The Trustees act as fiduciaries of monies deposited in the fund, invest those funds, and pay claims in appropriate cases. Applicants must be active members in good standing, having practiced law for at least 10 years. Board members serve a term of five years.

State Bar of Arizona Board of Legal Specialization (BLS) Committee (applications close 4/7/2023)

The purpose of the legal specialization program is to identify to the public and the Bar those lawyers who have demonstrated superior knowledge, skill, integrity, professionalism, and a high degree of competence in a specific field of law. By identifying attorneys who have a high degree of experience in certain fields of law, the program will improve the quality of legal services and provide useful information for those seeking legal services.

The Board of Legal Specialization (BLS) is authorized pursuant to Rule 44, Ariz. R. Sup. Ct. The BLS regulates the certification of legal specialists in nine practice areas: Administrative, Bankruptcy, Criminal, Estate and Trust, Family, Personal Injury and Wrongful Death, Real Estate, Tax, and Workers’ Compensation.

An Advisory Commission is established for each area of certification. Each Advisory Commission actively administers the program in its particular field, under the policy guidance of the BLS.

Time Commitment: The Board of Legal Specialization meets once per month. The length of the meetings may vary but typically last 30 minutes.

The Maricopa County Superior Court Pro Tempore (Application deadline is 2/1/2023)

The Maricopa County court is looking for volunteers to serve as a Judge Pro Tem. The recruitment period is now accepting applications for the next appointment term, 7/1/2023 - 6/30/2024

For those with criminal history experience, and flexible hours to cover nights, weekends and holidays, you may be eligible to be a Judge Pro Tem in Initial Appearance court, which is a paid part time position.

Superior Court Judge Pro Tem requirements:

12-142. Qualifications of judge pro tempore; residence; salary; exclusion from retirement provisions
A. A judge pro tempore of the superior court shall be:
1. Not less than thirty years of age.
2. Of good moral character.
3. Admitted to the practice of law in this state for not less than five years next preceding his appointment.
4. A resident of this state for not less than five years next preceding his appointment.
B. A judge pro tempore may be appointed to serve in the county of his residence or in a county of which he is not a resident.
C. The salary of a judge pro tempore shall be paid for the period of the appointment based on an annual salary equal to that of a superior court judge. A judge pro tempore may agree in advance to donate any or all of his services.
D. Judges pro tempore are not subject to any provision of law relating to the retirement of judges.

Applicants shall have resided in the state and shall have been admitted to practice law before the Arizona Supreme Court for not less than five (5) years.

No more than three of the five attorney-commissioners may be from the same political party and no more than two attorney-commissioners shall be residents of any one county. None of the attorney or non-attorney members of the commission shall hold any governmental office, elective or appointive, for profit and no attorney member is eligible for appointment to any judicial office of this state until one year after membership in the commission terminates. Tourism and Hospitality Advisory Board

This Board serves as a mechanism for evaluating projects to be funded for the hospitality industry's share of surplus Arena Tax Funds. The Board shall be responsible for evaluating projects to enhance the tourism and hospitality industry in Phoenix, subject to fiscal constraints and criteria imposed by the City and recommending those projects to the City Council.

This Board shall be comprised of fourteen (14) members appointed by the City Council, twelve of whom shall be voting members. Composition of the voting members shall be as follows: 8 members representing hoteliers, representing a hotel property in each Council district, 2 members at-large from a non-hotel sector of the hospitality industry, 2 members as City representatives, 1 member of the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitors Bureau. The two non-voting members shall consist of a representative of the City and a representative of the Greater Phoenix Convention and Visitors Bureau. There are currently two vacancies.

State Board of Equalization Vacancies


The Arizona State Board of Equalization conducts hearings on appeals, property valuation, and classification. The board’s goal is to provide fair and impartial venue for property owners, county assessors and the Department of Revenue to challenge the valuation and classification of real and personal property that is subject to taxation.

The Board consists of 41 members: 10 members, 2 from each district, who are appointed by the Board of Supervisors from each county with a population of more than 500,000 persons according to the most recent United States Decennial Census, 10 members who are appointed by the Governor from each county with a population of more than 500,000 persons according to the most recent United States Decennial Census and an additional member designated as Chairperson by the Governor who serves in a full time capacity.

Members shall be selected based on their work experience and other qualifications in at least one of the following categories:

1. Experience in at least three of the preceding eight years in property valuation, property tax appeals or appraising real property.
2. A certified general appraiser under ARS 32-3612.
3. A property valuation hearing officer or member of the State Board of Equalization; or any predecessor to the Board for at least three of the preceding eight years.
4. A member of the State Bar of Arizona with at least three years of experience in property valuation or condemnation practice.
5. Experience in at least three of the proceeding eight years as a real estate broker.

Self-Represented Litigant (SRL) Clinic:

Volunteer lawyers with at least three years of experience provide 30-minute consultations, by appointment, with individuals who cannot afford a lawyer and who are considering or already representing themselves in lawsuits. SRL Clinics take place as follows: In Phoenix, at the Sandra Day O’Connor Courthouse between noon and 4:00 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. In Tucson, at the Evo Deconcini Courthouse between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. every Thursday. Cases range greatly and can include civil rights, employment discrimination, social security and other types of civil actions. Children’s Law Center

The Volunteer Lawyers Program, Children’s Law Center’s greatest need right now is for volunteer attorneys to represent low-income clients, typically grandparents, seeking legal guardianship through the courts to be able to care for their at-risk grandchildren. Parents are often placing children in their grandparents’ care and leaving them without any documents. For the grandparent to enroll the child in school, get medical needs met and often maintain Section 8 housing, they need a court ordered guardianship. These cases can take 10 to 15 hours of time from start to finish with typically one hearing. They offer free Zoom training and mentoring from other attorneys who have taken these type of cases. Experienced Federal Court Litigators Wanted

The Federal Court Self-Service Clinic seeks litigators with at least several years of federal court practice experience to volunteer for 2 hours to provide brief phone direction to pro se litigants about civil cases in the District Court in Phoenix. You can choose how often to volunteer. You will receive advance information for conflict checks. Each litigant benefits from 30 minutes of guidance, so you can help up to four people in need. The Clinic is a collaborative effort of the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona in Phoenix and the Volunteer Lawyers Program. State Bar’s Monthly Free Legal Clinic

November 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The focus is Family Law and Employment Law. Volunteer lawyers provide free 30-minute consultations via Zoom to members of the public who sign up ahead of time. Apply to be a candidate for the Maricopa County Bar Association Board of Directors (9/30/22)

Make a difference in the Maricopa County legal community and help guide the Maricopa County Bar Association into the future by joining the MCBA Board of Directors.

The MCBA is inviting members to declare their candidacy for six available seats on the Board of Directors for 2023-2024 (one seat is designated for a paralegal).

Board members attend monthly meetings, liaise with one or more MCBA sections, divisions, or committees, and support the work of the association. They are expected to make every effort to attend MCBA events and assist with fundraising and member recruitment.

Candidates must be active members in good standing with the MCBA. Candidates are asked to submit a formal letter of candidacy to the board of directors, with the candidate’s signature, a 200-word bio, and a high-resolution color photo. Resumes or CVs are not acceptable. The bio may include an optional position statement of the candidate’s vision and priorities for the MCBA. Position statements and any other campaign or election materials may not refer to other candidates or include defamatory or inappropriate language, as determined by an ad hoc election review committee appointed by the president of the association.

Water Infrastructure Finance Authority Board (“WIFA”)—2 vacancies

WIFA is Arizona’s clean water and drinking water state revolving fund administrator. WIFA issues water quality bonds for water infrastructure and manages a technical assistance program that offers funding for wastewater and drinking water systems as part of a loan application. There are currently two vacancies: one representative from a county with a population greater than 500,000; and one representative from a county with a population of less than 500,000.

ABA House of Delegates
 - Application Deadline October 26, 2022

Purpose: Delegates represent the State Bar of Arizona at the Annual and Midyear Meetings of the American Bar Association House of Delegates. The State Bar reimburses only that portion of Delegate expenses relating to that portion of the House’s agenda which addresses the regulation of the profession and improving the quality of legal services.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications: Per policy, applicants must be Active Members of, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Arizona. Judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. The successful candidates must also be members of, and in good standing with, the ABA throughout their tenure as Delegates. The Delegates regularly appear before the Board of Governors to report on House of Delegates’ activities.

Openings: One appointment will be made by the State Bar's Board of Governors.

Term: Through August 2024.

 

Arizona Commission on Judicial Conduct - Application Deadline October 26, 2022

Purpose: This 11-member Commission (six judicial members appointed by the Arizona Supreme Court; three non-lawyer public members appointed by the Governor; and two State Bar members appointed by the Board of Governors) investigates complaints about alleged unethical conduct by Arizona judges and prosecutes and resolves formal charges of alleged judicial misconduct. Additional information regarding the Commission may be found at Article 6.1 of the Constitution of the State of Arizona and on the Commission’s website at www.azcourts.gov/azcjc.

Openings: One appointment will be made by the State Bar's Board of Governors.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications: Per policy, applicants must be Active Members of, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Arizona. Judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. Applicants must be admitted to practice law before the Arizona Supreme Court for not less than five years. The Commission meets in-person in Phoenix four times per year and holds telephonic meetings three times per year. Commission members also review weekly consent agendas and serve on investigative panels and formal hearing panels.

Term: Six years commencing January 2023.

 

DNA-People's Legal Services, Inc. Board of Directors - Application Deadline October 26, 2022

Purpose: This 24-member Board provides direction to the largest Native American legal services program in the country. The State Bar of Arizona is allotted three seats on the Board. Since its inception in 1967, DNA, a non-profit corporation, has pursued an aggressive program of legal advocacy for the disadvantaged, has actively promoted community legal education, and has been instrumental in the advancement of the Navajo Nation’s court system, which serves as a model for tribes across the nation.

Openings: Two appointments will be made by the State Bar’s Board of Governors.

Candidate Criteria/Qualifications: Per policy, applicants must be Active Members of, and in good standing with, the State Bar of Arizona. Judicial, retired, and inactive members are welcome to apply but must change their membership to “active” in order to be eligible. The DNA Board of Directors meets quarterly.

Citizen’s Clean Election Commission—Ongoing

The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission was committed by voter initiative in 1998. It is a five member, non-partisan commission created to provide voter education, ensure compliance with Arizona campaign finance laws, and provide public financing for campaigns so candidates are not beholden to special interests. At this time, all Commissioners are “hold overs,” and awaiting new appointees.

First Things First—Ongoing

First Things First is a voter-created program to provide early intervention services to Arizona children from birth to five years old. Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board—Ongoing

The Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board is a non-partisan volunteer body appointed by the Arizona governor to survey the existence and effect of discrimination in Arizona. The Board seeks to eliminate discrimination, publish studies, investigate allegations of unlawful discrimination, and more. There is currently a vacancy on the Board.

DNA-People’s Legal Services Volunteer Law Program—Ongoing

Due to limited resources, DNA turns away nearly 3,000 people a year who ask for our help. Lawyer Down the Hall – Mentors Needed

A short-term mentoring connection where experienced attorneys are paired with attorneys of any experience level who need assistance on a specific issue. Mentors provide career guidance, professionalism resources or networking opportunities.

Mentors are lawyers with more than 5 years of experience. Must have been in practice a minimum of 5 years (in Arizona or another jurisdiction). The mentor should not have been subject to any disciplinary sanctions within the past five years. Visit here for more information.

How would you like to help a hero? Born out of the destruction of 9/11, this program provides free estate planning legal services to first responders in Arizona. For the grandparent to enroll the child in school, get medical needs met and often maintain Section 8 housing, they need a court ordered guardianship.

These cases can take 10 to 15 hours of time from start to finish with typically one hearing. They offer free Zoom training and mentoring from other attorneys who have taken these type of cases.

Judicial Selection Advisory Board- City of Phoenix

The Judicial Selection Advisory Board is composed of the Chief Presiding Judge of the City Court, who shall serve as a nonvoting member, and nine voting members, consisting of the following: the Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of Maricopa County or his designee; an appellate court judge to be appointed by the Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court; a member of the Maricopa County Bar Association who shall reside in the City of Phoenix and who shall be appointed by the Mayor from among three nominees recommended by the Association’s Board of Directors; an active member of the State Bar of Arizona who shall reside in the City of Phoenix and who shall be appointed by the Mayor from among three nominees recommended by the State Bar’s Board of Governors; and five non-attorney public members who are nominated by the Mayor and who are residents of the City of Phoenix. The diversity of the City’s population shall be considered when making an appointment to the Board. None of the public members shall be an employee of the City of Phoenix. Voting members shall be subject to approval by the City Council. Voting members shall serve a term of three years and shall be eligible for reappointment for one additional three-year term. STATE BAR OF ARIZONA ANIMAL LAW SECTION (deadline 7/1/2022)

Nominate yourself to be a part of the Animal Law Section leadership with the State Bar of Arizona.

The Animal Law Section is currently looking for members to serve on the Section's Executive Council. We are seeking nominations for Chair-elect, Secretary and Budget Officer. The Chair-Elect position is a three-year commitment, and the other two positions are for a two-year term.

Executive Council Officers and the Members-at-Large are expected to attend and participate in Executive Council meetings, which are held once a month. Typically, the meetings are handled virtually via Zoom over the lunch hour. There is typically one in-person meeting per year as well. The Section's goals are to sponsor several programs each year in addition to a seminar at the State Bar's Annual Convention. The Executive Council is responsible for developing and presenting these programs. The Executive Council also plans social events and field trips for members of the section. Our goal this year is to also collaborate with other sections in some or all of these events.

City of Phoenix Women’s Commission Openings (6 vacancies)

The Phoenix Women’s Commission is to provides a formal forum for citizen review of the City’s diversity efforts, salary equity, and to serve as an advisory board to the Council. The Commission shall not become involved in political issues nor in matters which are outside of the City's jurisdiction. The Commission recommends improvements on matters related to the status of women and implement specific projects and programs as approved by the Mayor and City Council in the following areas: 1) Review City of Phoenix diversity efforts regarding recruitment, hiring, placement, and promotional programs, and salary equity to identify strengths and weaknesses; and to make recommendations of changes needed. 2) Define, review, and prioritize the problems of women as those problems relate to the City. 3) Recommend possible solutions to those problems. 4) Develop short range and long-range goals and objectives for improving the status of women. 5) Evaluate projects as requested by the Mayor and Council. 6) Recommend persons to serve on City standing committees, advisory boards and ad hoc committees. 7) Assist in efforts to provide information and educational programs to improve the status of women. 8) Provide written reports to the Council regarding recommendations, submit special reports at the request of the Council, and submit an annual report of its activities to the Council in December of each year.

City of Phoenix Judicial Selection Advisory Board (one vacancy)

This board is responsible for seeking out and encouraging qualified individuals to apply for the office of judge of the City Court or the City of Phoenix Ethics Commission. They also conduct investigations into the background and qualifications of candidates for the office of judge of the City Court or for the City of Phoenix Ethics Commission. That can include using questionnaires, personal interviews, and contacting individuals and institutions to obtain as much background information on the candidate as possible. Community Legal Services Board

The Community Legal Services (CLS) Board consists of 27 members, four of whom are appointed by the State Bar Board of Governors. Board members work collectively to ensure the fiscal integrity of the program, set policies and procedures directing CLS activities and goals, establish substantive law “priorities” and enhance the organization’s standing within the community. Maricopa County Flood Control Advisory Board

The Maricopa County Flood Control Advisory Board is seeking a member from Supervisory District 5 to sit on the Board. The Board is empowered to advise on matters ranging from flood control to water conservation. The DES Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Independent Oversight Committees (IOC) are comprised of local citizens who provide support and review matters to ensure that the rights of people with developmental disabilities are receiving the support required by law, and that it is provided in an appropriate manner. AZDHS Advisory Committee for the Preventative Health and Health Services Block Grant (4/15/2022)

The Arizona Committee for the Preventative Health and Health Services Block Grants holds public hearings to discuss assessments of the public health, allocate payment of federal monies to Arizona to further the purpose of preventative health, and collects data regarding these programs. The committee includes members of the general public and representatives of community-based organizations (including those representing minority community-based organizations). Arizona uses its funds to address skin cancer, data collection and dissemination of public health issues, improving county health departments, ensuring safe work sites, and the prevention of sexual violence.

Probate Lawyers Assistance Project (PLAP)

The Probate Lawyers Assistance Project (PLAP) is a pro bono program that provides free legal advice to eligible low income individuals who need assistance with Probate Court matters. PLAP is co-sponsored by the Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Section of the Maricopa County Bar Association, the State Bar of Arizona, and by the Volunteer Lawyers Program of Community Legal Services.

The program consists of volunteer attorneys who provide free half-hour consultations to individuals in order to answer legal questions, provide advice as to what forms to use from the Maricopa County Superior Court Self-Service Center, review completed Self-Service Center forms for accuracy or provide general information about what to expect at a court hearing and how to prepare for trial. The goal of the program is to help those who need assistance with Probate Court matters such as guardianships, conservatorships, informal and formal probates and trust litigation.

PLAP attorneys volunteer for three-hour shifts at their convenience. The program is designed to provide brief consultations to individuals, and volunteer attorneys are not expected to perform document preparation or provide ongoing representation. Primary professional liability coverage is provided by the Volunteer Lawyers Program.

Boys to Men of Greater Phoenix Mentoring Network – Applications Ongoing

Boys to Men of Greater Phoenix Mentoring Network seeks board members of any gender who have an interest in furthering its mission. The organization uses a group mentoring model to support struggling teenage boys in their community, with an emphasis on community involvement, intensive self-reflection, and habits of positive critical thinking and self-accountability. Town of Cave Creek – Citizens’ Water Advisory Committee – Applications Ongoing

The Town Council of the Town of Cave Creek is currently seeking applications from citizens wishing to serve on its Water Advisory Committee. As of this writing, the deadline has not been published, and applicants are encouraged to contact the Town Clerk townclerk@cavecreekaz.gov. Details about the opportunity and a copy of the application can be found here. Residency in Cave Creek is not required. The Committee advises Town Council on a variety of water-related issues.

Voices for CASA Children

Voices for CASA Children is a 501(c)(3) organization that brings a voice to Arizona’s children by promoting and supporting volunteer advocacy for abused and neglected children and public awareness of the importance of safe and permanent homes for all children. Voices for CASA Children seeks to give a Voice to these children through a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer. CASA volunteers look out for a child’s best interests, and presents those interests in Court.

Continuity and trust are very important for these children, so Voices for CASA asks that you dedicate yourself to the case until it’s closed. That means about a year and a half on average.

City of Phoenix Mayor’s Human Trafficking Task Force

Led by Councilman Jim Waring with co-chair Sarah Suggs of the O'Connor House, the Task Force was created in December 2013 by the Phoenix City Council to establish the City of Phoenix as a model in addressing and combating human trafficking. To meet this goal, Phoenix has adopted and implemented The Compass Plan, a five-year roadmap to eradicate human trafficking.

There is current 1 vacancy on the Task Force. The Task Force is comprised of 20 total member who meet on a quarterly basis. The Task Force and work groups define a strategic work plan consisting of four areas providing the strategic support to realize the world-class, community-wide Compass Plan to establish the City of Phoenix as a model in addressing and combating human trafficking. The four areas are: Community Awareness and Outreach, Training, Law Enforcement and Victim Services.

Arizona Board of Executive Clemency (2 upcoming vacancies): The mission of this Board is to protect public safety and contribute to a fair and effective justice system by ensuring that persons who remain a threat to society remain incarcerated and those who no longer present a risk are released to become productive citizens. The Board is comprised of five members who serve a term of five years, appointed on the basis of broad professional and educational qualifications with an interest in the state’s correctional program. Arizona Civil Rights Advisory Board (1 vacancy, no deadline):

ACRAB is a politically balanced volunteer body, authorized to make periodic surveys of the existence and effect of discrimination in the enjoyment of civil rights by any person within the state of Arizona, to foster the elimination of discrimination through community effort, and to issue publications of the results of studies, investigations and research as in its judgment will tend to promote goodwill and the elimination of discrimination between persons because of race, color, religion, sex, age, disability, familial status or national origin. Call for Nominations – State Bar’s Board of Governors

The State Bar of Arizona is governed by a 29-member Board of Governors whose members are primarily lawyers elected by Bar members. The call for nominations to run for election is currently underway, with nomination packets due by COB Tuesday, December 14, 2021. District 6/Maricopa County has three open seats. Elected Governors will serve three-year terms.

VOLUNTEER INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA)

The VITA program offers free tax help to people who generally make $57,000 or less, persons with disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing and e-filing their own tax returns. Volunteers receive free training to prepare basic tax returns. No prior tax preparation experience is required.

There are many different volunteer positions available with the VITA program including Tax Preparer / Do-It-Yourself Tax Preparation Guide, Greeter, Screener, Site Coordinator, Interpreter, and Tax Law Instructor / Assistant. For information, please click here.

The Board of Governors’ Special Constitutional Appointments Committee (SCAC) is currently recruiting for the following openings on judicial nominating commissions:

  • Arizona Commission on Appellate Court Appointments - 1for the two openings, applicants may not reside in Maricopa County
  • Coconino County Commission on Trial Court Appointments - 2Supervisorial District (SD) 1, SD 2, SD 3 or SD 5 only

Judicial and Public Defender Advisory Board

This Board conducts investigations into the background and qualifications of candidates for the office of Presiding Municipal Judge and Associate Municipal Judge and reviews proposals for selection of Public Defender and alternative defender services. One position is available for a Prosecutor from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office and residency is not required. More information can be found here.

Judicial Selection Advisory Board

This Board seeks out and encourages qualified individuals to apply for the office of judge of the City Court or the City of Phoenix Ethics Commission and conduct investigations into the background and qualifications of candidates. More information can be found here.

License Appeals Board

This Board shall conduct public hearings at which all parties, including the licensee or his counsel, or both, may present evidence and/or testimony concerning the denial, suspension or revocation of a license. The Board may uphold the notice of denial or revocation or reduce the revocation to a license suspension not exceeding sixty (60) days. More information can be found here.

City of Goodyear Boards and Commissions

City of Glendale Boards and Commissions

These positions are limited to Glendale residents. Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues

The purpose of this Commission is to review local, regional, and national disability programs and recommend to the administration of the City of Phoenix those exhibiting demonstrated worth for implementation or promotion by the City of Phoenix. Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission

The City of Phoenix Arts and Culture Commission is an advisory body to the Mayor and City Council, City Manager, and the Office of Arts and Culture.
